TWO FOR TWOHEY: The boys varsity soccer team defeated Akins 2-1 tonight in a non-district game at Nelson Field. Following the Knights’ 2-1 win at Manor on Dec. 13, head coach Nick Martin described the game as “another good preseason match against a good 6A team.” Martin said that the game began slowly for McCallum and attributed that in part to the effects of an extended holiday break and in part to the quality of their opponent. “Akins played well and closed down on us effectively,” Martin said. The Eagles took the lead in the 58th minute. With two minutes left in the game, however, Speight Twohey received a free kick from 50 yards out and put it on frame. The goalie mishandled the ball, and it went in to level the score at 1.
