The annual Informal Cities workshop in October offered a glimpse into the world of self-built, self-made environments. Led by Elisa Silva, founder of Enlace Arquitectura, students participated in Zoom conversations with people in Siquisique, Venezuela, an area where Silva has had extensive engagement.
With perspective gained from these firsthand accounts, students created fictional narratives imagining and designing alternative futures for the Siquisique Valley, where ancestral ecological cultivation practices are currently at odds with global economic and development pressures.
The narratives allowed students to push beyond differences in languages, disciplines, and conventional architectural methods. Their stories were put together in a handmade book as a gift to the community for sharing their time with the workshop.
