Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman has scored a historical first by becoming the first Black and first Asian American coach to reach the college football finals.
Freeman is Korean American and has been open about his background in the past. He said that his father was in the Air Force and met his mother while stationed in South Korea, and that over the years he learned to appreciate his heritage.
“I embraced my Korean background. I did Taekwondo, which is a Korean martial art, growing up,” Freeman said. “But also, you know, I did sports and embraced my African American side.”
Freeman was previously the team’s defensive coordinator, and now, as the current head coach, boasts an overall record of 34-9.
