Fifty-one weeks after last January’s lingering ice storm burst pipes and flooded their southwest Portland school, the children of Markham Elementary finally got to return to their home campus on Tuesday. Since last January, Markham’s student body spent time learning online, then were parceled out to four different other Southwest Portland elementary schools. This fall, Markham students were reunited in a wing of Jackson Middle School, while construction crews worked to replace Markham’s galvanized pipes and abate its exposed asbestos. The school was by far the hardest-hit of any Portland-area school during last year’s ice storm. For students new to Markham this year and all its kindergarteners, Tuesday was the first day they were ever able to be inside the building, and so, the first hour was spent exploring.
