Corvallis-based wildlife photographer Toshan Wijeratne captured a stunning photo of a burrowing owl in the glow of a rainbow on Christmas Day 2024. He snapped the photo in Shedd, Ore., between Salem and Eugene. Adult burrowing owls are about 7 to 10 inches tall, weigh around 5 ounces, and have a wingspan of up to 22 inches. The tiny long-legged critters live in nests they build in vacant burrows left by rodents. They have a high tolerance for carbon dioxide, which allows them to spend long periods underground.
