Not many people know about the simple formula that ties an address to the last cross street. In fact, I (Fran Gardner) haven’t found anyone who knows about it. It goes like this: take those last two digits and divide them by 0.2. That figure is the distance in feet to the front door from the previous intersection. This quirk in addresses dates to the early 1930s, when Portland, then with a population of about 315,000, was still a collection of smaller settlements, among them Albina, Linnton, St. Johns and Lents.
