Tonight is the Wolf Moon.
Tonight’s full moon is what’s known as the Wolf Moon. According to the Maine Farmers’ Almanac, this full moon is named thus on account of the packs of wolves that can sometimes be heard howling during snowy winters.
Skywatchers will find the Moon snuggling up with Mars tonight. Across the U.S. and Eastern Canada, the Moon will appear to pass in front of Mars over a couple of hours, as the pair rise into the eastern sky.
Image description: The full moon glows brilliantly in the dark sky. Contrails from an aircraft cross in front of the white orb. The sky is dappled with black clouds. This full moon, captured on Sept. 17, 2024, was a partial lunar eclipse, a supermoon, and a Harvest Moon.
