Forty-eight years ago, Phil McConkey ‘75 and his company in the U.S. Naval Academy marched in Jimmy Carter’s inaugural parade, on Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue.
On Wednesday, Phil’s daughter, Midshipman First Class May McConkey, joined her company in saluting Carter’s hearse as it passed the Navy Memorial, on the same avenue.
“It is a real full-circle moment for us,” Phil says. “Surreal.”
The Super Bowl champion spoke with Erik Brady ‘72 of The Buffalo News for a terrific column which told much of McConkey’s great story that started on the West Side of Buffalo, from his daughter’s matching him in earning the honor of being a part of the Naval Academy’s “color company,” to his NFL tryout, to his inclusion in the New York Giants’ “A Night With Legends” (with coach Bill Parcells) as the team celebrated 100 seasons.
