#OnThisDay in 1943, agricultural researcher, artist, educator, and humanitarian George Washington Carver passed away. Born into slavery around 1864 in Missouri, Carver faced immense challenges from an early age, including illness and racial discrimination.Despite these obstacles, he pursued education passionately, ultimately earning a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from Iowa State Agricultural College. Carver became the first Black student and later the first Black faculty member at Iowa State. In 1896, he joined the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, an historically Black college and university (HBCU), under the leadership of Booker T. Washington. There, Carver devoted his life to agricultural education and research, focusing on sustainable farming practices that benefitted impoverished farmers.
