A Jan. 7 notice posted at the encampment declared a health hazard and public nuisance of the long standing encampment, citing loose syringes, human and animal waste, rodent burrows and rotting food. In addition, the notice said sidewalks and lanes of traffic were obstructed by belongings and debris. City Manager Paul Buddenhagen ordered the encampment be closed Dec. 18, 2024. The city plans to clear the area of people, items and vehicles, and those who do not comply could be cited or arrested.
