Today, we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, a proud son of Georgia, former Georgia governor, and the 39th President of the United States.
Known for his unwavering commitment to faith, kindness, and servant leadership, President Carter was an esteemed example of Morehouse values. As a governor, he was a pivotal advocate for Civil Rights and equity, working alongside the 6th Morehouse College President, Benjamin E. Mays, and speaking out when many prominent figures hesitated to use their voices and power for justice. Subsequently, he was awarded an honorary degree from Morehouse College in 1975.
As President, he championed education by creating the US Department of Education in 1979, increased federal funding for Pell Grants for low-income students to attend college, and ensured HBCUs were legally eligible to receive federal funding in 1980.
