San Francisco is unlikely to experience a catastrophic wildfire like those that broke out in the Los Angeles area. However, one neighborhood is at high risk and several are at moderate risk. The Palisades and Eaton Fires in L.A. both ignited in large open spaces and were fueled by bone-dry vegetation and treacherous terrain, whereas San Francisco tends to stay cool and humid from the fog and has a different topography. Certain parts of the East Bay hills, Santa Cruz Mountains, North Bay and rural parts of Santa Clara County are much more susceptible to wildfires. But in San Francisco, only about 1% of San Francisco residents live in areas of moderate or high risk of wildfire.
