New fiber implants provide an innovative method for delivering light to the brain, potentially enhancing techniques such as optogenetics. These tapered polymer fibers are about the width of a human hair and can influence the behavior of more neurons while also recording their activity compared to previous methods. When compared to standard optical fibers of the same diameter, this technique achieves more than double the lateral spread of light using the tapered fibers.
