Exciting news for science!
The White Desert Foundation’s inaugural grant recipient, Project LifeMet of saef_arc has begun its search for meteorites in Antarctica. The LifeMet team is investigating how Antarctic microorganisms interact with meteorites, which could provide a rich source of
nutrients for life in an otherwise barren and harsh environment, and how this might change with a changing Antarctica.
The movement of meteorites is done with great care to keep them sterile, at the same ambient Antarctic temperature, and within the legal permitting - due to their great scientific value. Once back in the lab they will be able to confirm their type and extraterrestrial provenance, and analyse them for microbial inhabitants. Project LifeMet will be returning from their field camp in Antarctica in the next couple of
weeks, so we will be able to share more about their findings from Dronning Maud Land.
