Today's honor goes to MLB's first black player.
Moses Fleetwood Walker '81 is widely regarded as the first openly black player in Major League Baseball. He enrolled at Oberlin in 1878 and quickly gained recognition as a skilled catcher on Oberlin's intercollegiate baseball team.
Walker's standout performance during the decisive 1881 season finale caught the attention of the University of Michigan, who then recruited him for their baseball program. Prior to his Major League debut, Walker played for various semi-professional and minor league clubs. In 1884, he joined the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association.
After his baseball career, Walker published the pamphlet "Our Home Colony: A Treatise on the Past, Present, and Future of the Negro Race in America" and edited a Black-issues newspaper.
