Lisa Whitfield ’90, owner of For Ewe: An Inclusive Fiber Community, has always been drawn to fiber arts. Her grandmother taught her how to crochet at age 5. Later in life, the “magic” of knitting drew her in after an encounter on a bus with someone who was knitting. During her time at Oberlin, Lisa noticed what she felt was a gap in the college and community. She wanted a space where she felt a true sense of belonging. She remembered her grandmother’s home, and how her grandmother welcomed everyone with open arms. “My grandmother's house was a hub where people came—sometimes for her cooking, sometimes because they were in trouble and knew she would help,” shares Whitfield. It was a place where people could come as they were, be treated with dignity, and find community. This was Lisa's inspiration behind creating For Ewe.
