Congratulations to Maya McCollum ’23, who was awarded a 2024 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship! A TIMARA and studio art double degree graduate, Maya plans to engage textile and sound artists in Mexico, Australia, Portugal, Iceland, and the UK in local, community-based craft making. “I will learn new techniques, record sounds of the craft process, and gather materials from the landscape to create a ‘listening garment’ that weaves together my experiences,” she says. McCollum was recently also a Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts resident and is continuing to work on various interdisciplinary art projects. The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant for purposeful, independent exploration outside the United States, awarded to graduating seniors nominated by one of 40 partner colleges.
