When Maggie Bayless ’77 was at Oberlin, she served as OSCA’s membership secretary and spearheaded an effort to improve the OSCA lottery process. Little did she know that these process improvements would foreshadow her future career. In 1994, after a dozen years of collaborating with the collection of businesses that grew out of the Ann Arbor institution Zingerman’s Deli, Bayless founded ZingTrain. A kind of ongoing colloquium for progressive business owners, ZingTrain helps its seminar takers—mainly food entrepreneurs—strengthen their organizations by learning about leadership development, staff training, and self-management In keeping with her cooperative background, Bayless chooses to share her knowledge rather than monopolizing valuable information. In this feature from the Winter/Spring 2024 OAM by Hanna Raskin ’98, Bayless shares more about her approach to ZingTrain (and shares a recipe for Risotto alla Sbirraglia!) at the link in our bio. 📸: Melissa McKinney
