🪷 In honor of Women's History Month and the ongoing ✊🏿 Black History Month celebrations on campus, we present today's illustrious alumna: Fanny Jackson Coppin. ✨💐💫 · Fanny Jackson Coppin, born into slavery, gained freedom at age 12 and enrolled at Oberlin College in 1860. She taught reading and writing to formerly enslaved people while studying during the day. In 1865, she became one of the first Black women in the U.S. to earn a college degree. Coppin accepted a teaching position at the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, where she was appointed principal in 1869, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position. In 2022, the Andrew Jackson Elementary School in South Philadelphia was renamed the Fanny Jackson Coppin School. Coppin State University also announced the "Philadelphia Pathway" scholarship, providing free tuition for Coppin elementary school graduates. · Photo courtesy of Oberlin College Archives ﹣ #womenshistorymonth #bhm #oberlinalumni #oberlin #oberlinco...
