🪷 In honor of Women's History Month and the ongoing ✊🏿 Black History Month celebrations on campus, we present today's illustrious alumna: Marjorie Witt Johnson.✨💐💫 Marjorie Witt Johnson '35 was a dancer, social worker, pioneer of modern dance, and founder of the Karamu Dancers in Cleveland. After graduating from Oberlin with a B.S. in social work in 1935, Johnson worked as a dance counselor at Camp Chippewa, where she honed her skills in working with inner-city girls. She founded a group called the Playhouse Settlement Dance Group, which later evolved into the Karamu Dancers at Karamu House. The group gained recognition and was selected to perform at the 1940 World’s Fair in New York. Afterward, Johnson took her talents to public schools in North Carolina, Atlanta, and Chicago. In 2005, the Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre presented "Daughter of a Buffalo Soldier," which celebrated the life and legacy of Johnson, who was born the daughter of a Buffalo Soldier in Wyoming.
