Kiese Laymon '98, a writer and educator whose works chronicle the Black experience through the lens of his Mississippi upbringing, was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2022. His books include 2013's Long Division, which won the 2022 NAACP Image Award for fiction, and 2018's Heavy; the latter won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.
