Today, on December 3, we celebrate 190 years of Oberlin College, a place where education and service go hand in hand. From its humble beginnings as the Oberlin Collegiate Institute in 1833, Oberlin has been a pioneer in higher learning, social justice, and artistic expression. The college was named after John Frederic Oberlin, a French pastor and philanthropist who devoted his life to improving the lives of others. Oberlin’s founders, John J. Shipherd and Philo P. Stewart, shared his vision and created a community that values faith, diversity, and excellence.
