Today, we salute Wayman E. Scott, whose excellence and bravery as a Tuskegee Airman paved the way.
Wayman E. Scott '49 was an esteemed Tuskegee Airman who served as a U.S. Army flight officer after graduating from their notable flight school in 1945. This groundbreaking unit was the first African American aviation squadron in U.S. military history. In 2017, a monument honoring the nine Oberlin residents who served as Tuskegee Airmen in World War II was dedicated in the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Scott's academic journey led him from Oberlin College '49 to earning advanced degrees in physics. His career spanned teaching roles and research physicist positions, notably at the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratories in Maryland.
