Congratulations to the 2023 Photojournalism Challenge Grand Prize Winner, Lucas Kurzweil. ⁠ ⁠ Lucas Kurzweil’s photo “Get a Dunk Te’Andre” will appear in The New York Times this fall. When asked about the context behind his winning photo, here is what Lucas had to say: ⁠ ⁠ “This image was part of my School of New York Times final project. I’ve been a basketball fan for most of my life and it was one of the first subjects I photographed when I started taking pictures in the sixth grade. For the project, I chose to photograph a series of pickup basketball games across the city. The player pictured is Te’Andre King, a 21-year-old hooper, at the Chelsea Courts. I took a portrait of Te’Andre sitting on a bench after his game and then asked if he wanted to dunk for a photo. I shot from a low angle and used my widest lens to include the sky and perspective from the fence to make Te’Andre look heroic, powerful and almost otherworldly.
