Were you as excited as we were to hear the Lowell, Massachusetts, shout out on SNL this weekend? In honor of this shout out, here are 3 quick facts about the Lowell Mill Girls, provided by UML staff at the Tsongas Industrial History Center. 1. The young women (most between the ages of 15-35) from New England farms came to work in the textile mills and lived in company-owned boardinghouses. 2. “Mill girls” tended spinning frames and power looms, making thread and weaving cloth. 3. “Mill girls” earned money, often for the first time in their lives, leading to economic independence, and money being sent home to their parents’ farms. #snl #saturdaynightlive #lowell #umasslowell #millcity #millgirls #bowenyang #timotheechalamet
