This week marks 50 years since the historic draft of two Jackson State University Football legends. On Jan. 28, 1975, Walter “Sweetness” Payton and Robert “Dr. Doom” Brazile became the first teammates from a historically black college or university to get drafted to the NFL in the first round of the same year. Payton and Brazile were two of five Jackson State players drafted that year, which was more than any Mississippi school. Payton and Brazile went on to have award-winning and record-setting careers and were later enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
