This Draper X-2 Shuttle Loom, that was donated to Levi Strauss & Co. by Cone Mills, has now returned to Greensboro, North Carolina! 👖💙
The loom dates to the 1930s and was used to weave denim for LS&Co by Cone Mills in Greensboro. The denim woven on the loom was 29” wide, perfect for one leg of a pair of 501® jeans.
Cone began making denim for Levi Strauss & Co. around 1915. By 1922, LS&Co. was buying all their denim from the firm. A few years later, Cone developed 10 oz. red selvedge denim used exclusively for LS&Co.’s famous copper-riveted waist overalls (501®s). The red thread woven into the selvedge helped Cone distinguish LS&Co. denim from denim made for other companies.
When Levi’s® 501® jeans surged in popularity around the globe, the increase in demand eventually led to a boost in denim production. Around 1984, Cone Mills adopted a modern, economical double-wide loom, without shuttles. The wider denim was cut in the middle, eliminating selvedg...
