Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! February is certainly about celebrating, uplifting, and learning about the achievements and activism of Black inventors, innovators, organizers, scholars, artists, etc. throughout our country's history but also about acknowledging the continued struggle for progress, especially for Black youth, like those who led the desegregation sit-in movement beginning in Greensboro, NC and spreading to thirteen other states – including Louisiana – and expanding to other public spaces. ⁠ ⁠ Nearly a year ago, the state legislature convened a special session on crime and public safety that saw #raisetheage legislation repealed making #Louisiana one of only four states that prosecutes 17-year-olds as adults. Right now, organizations across the state are raising awareness about Amendment 3, a constitutional amendment – to be voted on during a special election on 3/29 – that could see even younger children transferred to the adult criminal legal system.
