Have y’all visited Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana?
They have the largest bald cypress in the United States! This beauty is 83 feet tall and 17 feet in diameter.
This cypress tree is one of the primary reasons Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge was established.
Nearly all old-growth cypress in Louisiana were logged to extinction. This cypress remains and is a national treasure. It is estimated to be over 1,000 years old.
Volunteers work hard to maintain some of the last remaining old-growth cypress trees located at the refuge.
Highly recommend visiting these beauties. Check the refuge site to make sure it is open. The refuge floods annually.
