This Black History Month, we’re honoring the Black queer activists who paved the way for liberation. Throughout February, we’ll be spotlighting powerful figures who fought for justice, community, and the rights of Black LGBTQ+ people.
Kicking off our series is Marsha P. Johnson (1945–1992)—a fearless Black trans activist and organizer. She played a pivotal role in the Stonewall Riots of 1969, standing against police brutality and igniting the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.
Beyond Stonewall, Marsha co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with Sylvia Rivera, providing housing and care for homeless trans youth—many of whom were Black and Brown queer folks rejected by society. Her activism was rooted in community survival, radical love, and the belief that all queer and trans people deserve dignity...
