Gut health is crucial for a deer’s overall well-being, as approximately 70% of mammals’ immune systems reside in their gut. A healthy gut leads to a healthy deer. It’s important to note that while corn provides high energy, it’s not beneficial for a deer’s gut microbiome—similar to how indulging in a Snickers bar isn’t great for humans. During this time of year, I prioritize feeding a lot of alfalfa. That said, I still include cracked corn, roasted soybeans, Anilogics, and my special blended powder, all complemented by the diverse food plots across our farms. I ensure that both options are always available to them. Plus, alfalfa is much cheaper compared to the equivalent tonnage of corn! If you don’t have the equipment, small square bales work well, though you’ll need to break them apart.
