ā³ The Cape Coral Country Club started holding an intercollegiate golf tournament in 1963. This tournament grew steadily in size and reputation, to the point that in 1972, the club was given the honor of hosting the NCAA golf tournament. It was the first time the tournament had been played in the South, and the country club and tournament organizers spent more than a year preparing.
ā Everything was set until a hurricane blew through the area the weekend before the tournament. Flights were canceled, which delayed the arrival of many teams. The torrential rains soaked the course and prevented early practice rounds. Nonetheless, the skies cleared by Monday, practices took place Tuesday, and the tournament started on schedule on Wednesday.
š The tournament ended with history being made. With no provision for a playoff, University of Texas teammates Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw were both declared winners. Both golfers went on to great success on...
