In 1992, Aveda met with the Yawanawá at the UN conference on environment and development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What began as a sourcing partnership for the ingredient urukum has evolved into an ecosystems protection partnership to help safeguard their critically important territory in the heart of the Amazon.
The foundation of their long standing relationship is clean water - ensuring the community has access to safe and clean drinking water, and helping protect hundreds of waterways like the Rio Gregorio which the community depends on. Additional impacts achieved together include protecting and preserving 450K acres of pristine Amazon rainforest from deforestation which prevents the release of approximately 35 million tons of CO2 into atmosphere, and establishing a sustainable food security program.
