A baby Painted Lady Caterpillar's first meal is its eggshell! Once the caterpillar is ready to emerge, it pokes a hole in the eggshell and begins to eat the shell from the inside out. It truly is a symbol of new beginnings and growth. The journey is just beginning for this tiny caterpillar. It will go through five stages of growth, known as instars, before it becomes a pupa and then finally transforms into a beautiful butterfly. Observe the butterfly life cycle first hand with an Insect Lore Butterfly kit.
