At the 3rd Annual Black Male Summit, during the “Fixing Our Communities” panel, Uche emphasized that we need to treat gun violence like a disease. This perspective urges us to move from reacting to violence to preventing its spread. Like a disease, gun violence has causes, patterns, and widespread impacts. To stop it, we must address its root causes—(generational) poverty, lack of quality education, systemic inequities, trauma, and inadequate mental health resources. Just as we contain diseases by targeting their sources, we must do the same with violence. Prevention is key.
