Snow is falling in the Portland area, with sleet, rain and freezing rain also forecast throughout today. Elevation will likely determine how much precipitation people see in their area. The snow level was forecast at 500 feet above sea level earlier in the morning, rising to 4,000 feet this afternoon. David Bishop, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, said storm systems interacting with mountains and other features of the terrain can cause more snow, rain and other precipitation at upper elevations.
