World Whale Day, observed every third Sunday of February, is a global reminder of the urgent need to protect these ocean giants. Originally established in Hawaii to honor humpback whales, the day now highlights critical threats like entanglement, ship strikes, climate change, and ocean pollution. Beyond their ecological importance, whales also play a vital role in the global economy. Each great whale contributes an estimated $2 million in ecosystem services over its lifetime, from carbon sequestration to supporting fish populations. Whale-watching tourism alone generates millions—Alaska’s industry, for instance, sustains over a thousand jobs and brings in $37.3 million in annual labor income.
