Across Iowa, dozens of school districts have removed Jodi Picoult's novel "Nineteen Minutes" since the state's controversial book ban became law more than a year ago. But at desmoinespublicschools, students can still read the best-selling book about the fallout from a tragic school shooting. They also can check out John Green's award-winning book "Looking for Alaska," which more than four-dozen other Iowa school districts have taken off the shelves. In fact, officials at Iowa's biggest public school district haven't removed a single volume from DMPS' library collection of nearly 700,000 books — despite hundreds of the titles appearing on book removal lists from across the state because of the Iowa law banning literature from schools that depict sex acts.
