Alice M. Scott made history in 1994 as the first woman and first African American mayor of Canton. Before that, she served for 13 years as an election commissioner in Madison County. A civic leader dedicated to improving the lives of others, she played a key role in bringing Nissan to Canton, Mississippi, by signing the memorandum of understanding, which led to thousands of jobs for residents across the state. She was later elected alderman-at-large in 2005. Scott, a native of Benton, Mississippi, earned a Bachelor of Science in language arts with a minor in social studies from Jackson State University. She also holds a Master of Science in education in elementary and secondary administration and supervision from the University of Southern Mississippi.
