#OnThisDay in 1965, Jimmie Lee Jackson, a 26-year-old civil rights activist, was shot by an Alabama state trooper. He died on February 26. Jackson had been taking part in a peaceful protest in Marion, Alabama, advocating for voting rights. During a violent police crackdown on the demonstrators, Jackson was attacked while trying to protect his mother and grandfather. Just days after his funeral, leaders including James Bevel, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lewis organized the historic Selma to Montgomery marches in protest of the voter suppression and racial violence.
