Across the United States on Feb. 5 demonstrators gathered on the steps on all 50 capitol buildings including Austin’s. As a result of the online #50501 movement, a hashtag that promoted 50 protests at each of the 50 capitals across the country, more than 500 protesters convened at the Texas capitol building. The main point of the demonstration was to protest President Trump’s executive actions ranging from ramping up ICE for increased deportation to rolling back diversity initiatives and transgender rights. Animosity toward Project 2025 was also on the agenda. Although the protest began on the steps of the Capitol, as the crowd grew in size, the organizers of the protest encouraged the demonstrators to walk down the center of Congress Avenue. “We’re going to move to Congress (Avenue),” one speaker said to the crowd. “We’re ready to be detained for being in the streets, but these are our rights we’re fighting for.
