Our journey began in 1584 and we are still in the business – as Germany´s oldest paper mill with uninteruppted manufacturing history since 441 years. When papermaker Merten Spieß established the ‘Reylingehäusische Papiermühle’ at the foot of the Solling mountains in Germany paper was made entirely by hand, a delicate and labour-intensive craft passed on for generations. Skilled papermaker carefully formed each sheet using wooden frames and moulds, creating high-quality paper essential for writing, printing, and art. ​ ​Even by 1709, centuries after our founding, the craft of papermaking remained unchanged. Every sheet was still made manually—an art form in itself—until the first paper machines were introduced at the end of the 18th century. ​ ​A testament to our rich history, a handwritten replica of our foundation charter from 1774 still exists today, connecting us to our roots and reminding us of the centuries-old craftsmanship that continues to inspire us. ​ ​#Hahnemuehle #History #...
