Artificial intelligence and machine learning are shifting many industries around the world, and sports are no different.
Andrew, a sophomore on Harvard’s baseball team, is concentrating in applied mathematics and computer science. Last summer, he played a role in the application of artificial intelligence in athletics, helping Tread Athletics, a baseball development company, test and develop a new AI pitching coach as part of his internship.
The goal of the experimental AI pitching coach is to provide more access to high-level coaching. Instead of paying a premium for an in-person pitching coach, athletes can send videos of themselves pitching and receive coaching and feedback.
“It was really fascinating for me. Throughout my whole life, I’ve had two main loves, baseball and coding. To be able to integrate those was super fun,” he said. “I was on the team bus every day, having fun with coding. I was really interested to see if you could make an AI pitching coach with just video.”
