Nothing will inhibit a goaltender’s ability to move effectively, shift into saves, or quickly transition with a play going back across the grain than having a stance that is too wide. Here, mountstcharlesjrmounties netminder and bosak_goaltending mentor student levsmotkin works on maintaining a balanced stance while moving with this continuous east west warm-up drill. Key points we are looking for during the drill:
• on shots back across the grain, is the goalie able to execute a balanced save with their body/weight driving into the save?
• on shots that go along with the grain, does the goalie avoid sliding/overreacting and putting themselves out of position?
• on the well placed “goal scorers” shot above the pad, are they balanced enough to get their hands to the puck or do they drop and block?
• while moving, does the goaltender get their feet back underneath of them?
