Somewhere between 12-18 months babies wean from bottles and move over to cups exclusively. When it comes to bottles, as an NP and IBCLC at NAPS, we often say pick one and stick to it. But, what’s fun about cups is that you can try all different kinds of cups from sippy cups to straw cups to see what your baby likes! While many babies start practicing drinking from cups at around 6 months of age, you often see a much bigger volume intake from cups during this final transition away from bottles. Your kiddo may like milk out of a cup (whole milk or breast milk), or they may just like water. Either way, to get them used to a cup and away from bottles, here are our top 3 tips to help the transition:
1) Keep it around! Put in on the highchair at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Keep it local so they can pick it up and drink it as they’d like. The more they see it consistently, at each meal, the more they will get used to it.
