“We need in every community a group of angelic troublemakers.” – Bayard Rustin
Bayard Rustin (1912–1987) was the architect of the Civil Rights Movement, a close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the mastermind behind the 1963 March on Washington—one of the most significant protests in U.S. history. Yet, his identity as a Black gay man often pushed him to the margins of history.
A lifelong activist, Rustin fought for racial justice, nonviolent resistance, and LGBTQ+ rights. Despite facing discrimination both within and outside the movement, he never wavered in his belief that freedom must be collective. In his later years, he became a vocal advocate for gay rights, reminding the world that justice must be intersectional.
Bayard Rustin’s legacy teaches us that Black queer people have always been at the forefront of social change. His courage and strategic brilliance continue to inspire activists fighting for liberation today.
