THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIRECTIONS AND A MAP: Serving on a Black History Month panel discussing historically Black colleges and universities on Feb. 10 in the MAC, Grambling State University alumna Stephanie Featherstone fielded a question about why a high school student would select an HBCU. In her answer, she said that high school students are a blank canvas where the future possibilities are limitless. The difference between high school and college, she said, is like the difference between following directions and using a map. In high school, she said you follow directions to get to your destination. College, however, is like using a map to get there. There isn’t just one way to reach your destination, and an HBCU might be the best route to get there, but it’s not the only route.
