Pulsar wind nebulas like this one are clouds of energetic X-ray-producing particles that are driven away from dead, collapsed stars. In this image, X-rays from our NASAChandraXray observatory show up in gold and blue, while infrared rays spotted by the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope are red and blue.
Astronomers estimate that light from the supernova explosion reached Earth about 1,700 years ago, or when the Mayan empire was flourishing and the Jin dynasty ruled China. However, by cosmic standards, this is one of the youngest supernova remnants in the Milky Way galaxy.
