The Invaders Movement
Memphis had its own Black Panther-inspired movement. ✊🏾 The Invaders were young, radical, and unapologetic—fighting for Black economic empowerment, self-defense, and justice in the late 1960s.
They stood alongside MLK during the Sanitation Workers’ Strike, but after violence broke out at the March 28 protest, they were blamed and targeted by police. Their headquarters were raided, and their leaders were arrested, but their mission lived on.
Though short-lived, their impact was powerful. The Invaders challenged racism head-on, pushing for a Memphis where Black power meant economic independence and self-determination. 🖤🔥
