By the time he graduated high school in the mid-1990s, JayJay Goodvin thought he had experienced all that there was to experience in Iowa. He set out to explore the country, hoping to become a stand-up comedian, and for more than a decade, he did just that.
Goodvin became fully immersed in the hospitality industry. As he continued traveling across the country, he took jobs ranging from a line cook at a guest ranch in Arizona to a private chef for a preparatory high school in Illinois.
But he started a family along the way with his wife, Monica, and was looking for work that allowed him to be home more with his kids. In 2009, he returned to Iowa City, doing brief marketing work for local restaurants before accepting a job as a cafeteria worker for the Iowa City Community School District.
Missing that feeling of traveling and the fast-paced environment of working in a restaurant, Goodvin started his blog titled "The Iowa Gallivant" in 2014. What initially started as a family scrapboo...
